February, LGBT+ History Month in the UK

Every February is the LGBT+ History Month in the UK, an annual event organised by Schools OUT, the UK's LGBT charity. In 2005, LGBT+ History Month was established in UK schools with the aim to teach young people about the issues LGBTQIA+ individuals face and make schools a more inclusive atmosphere for members of the community. This month was chosen as British LGBT+ History Month to coincide with the removal of Section 28 in 2003, which banned the promotion of homosexuality.

The event has increased awareness of LGBT concerns and identified historic events that need more acknowledgment, especially in schools, for more than 15 years. For a variety of reasons, LGBT+ History Month is significant. Every sector benefits differently from the yearly event, from schools to business, from nations to global politics.

“The Politics of Art” is the topic of LGBT+ History Month 2022. The topic is based on the National Curriculum and honours LGBTQ+ artists’ various accomplishments and contributions. Individually, we may celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month by reading books and movies written by LGBTQIA+ people, investigating homosexual problems, and learning more about LGBTQIA+ history and historical personalities.

Throughout the month of February, events are placed around the UK to commemorate LGTB+ History Month. From exhibitions to song-and-dance performances, from conversations to online dialogues. A commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first Gay Pride March is held at the London LGBT+ Centre from 3-6 pm on Saturday 5th February, and on February 8, “Our Collection Voice”, a special photo voice exhibition is curated at Brixton Library to document and express the Covid-19 lockdown experiences of Black, Asian and/or other marginalised LGBTQI+ communities through a series of photographs. On February 11, Brixton Library presents a conversation centred on transgender activist, author, and journalist Shon Faye’s bestseller book The Transgender Issue.

So, whether you want to learn about LGBTQ+ history or learn more about it, keep a lookout for these LGBT+ History Month events taking place around the UK during February and beyond. Everything makes sense.
